The Monroe Soil and Water Conservation District was recently recognized on the Monroe County Beacon website for a donation to the S.O.M.A. Manna Food Bank in Woodsfield, Ohio. More than 100 pounds of meat were donated to the food bank from the hog we purchased at this year’s Monroe County Fair.
From the Monroe County Beacon:
“We just wanted to help the community. We kind of killed two birds with one stone… We supported 4-H and the less fortunate of the county,” said Katie Day, Program Manager at Monroe Soil and Water. Darrell Craig, the food pantry manager, said the donation was exceptional due to the protein it will provide those the pantry serves.

The Hay and Silage at the Monroe County Fair is once again sponsored by the Monroe Soil and Water Conservation District in cooperation with the Monroe County Agricultural Society and Agland. The hay/silage samples will be pulled from a representative field/farm; not from a single bale. Entries will be sent to determine moisture, protein, ADF, NDF, and energy content. Entries will then be scored on feed value, to determine the class winners.
Entry fee will be $3.00 (a $15 value.) The participants and the SWCD will receive copies of the test results. (Results will be confidential and will only be used by SWCD for ranking purposes.)
Entries will consist of core samples, one-quart zip bag full, pulled from several bales (15 small square bales or large round) from the same field/farm. Samples will be pulled with an approved core sampling tool, which can be obtained from the SWCD office, OSU extension, or Agland. Small square bales and large round bales are combines in all hay classes. Hay classes will be mixed grass, clover, or alfalfa. Silage classes will be corn silage or haylage.
Entries may be submitted to the Monroe SWCD at 117 N. Main St, 3rd Floor, Woodsfield, Oh (Monroe Bank Building) beginning Monday, August 15 and ending at noon on Thursday, August 18, 2016.
Overall Hay Grand Champion and Silage Grand Champion will be selected and awarded at the SWCD annual meeting on October 1st.
Please contact Katie at the Monroe SWCD office at 740-472-5477 with any questions.
